Desparately Seeking Axel

The Seattle Times reports a story of Marine Recruiters:

Just a few tests. And so many free opportunities, the recruiters told him.

He could pursue his love of chemistry. He could serve anywhere he chose and leave any time he wanted on an "apathy discharge" if he didn't like it. And he wouldn't have to go to Iraq if he didn't want to.

That's what people do in the Marine Corps, pursue their love of chemistry.

I don't understand the outcome, though. Is Axel now signed up, or did the lawyer get through so that anything he signed is now invalidated? All it says is that his signed papers are "in the mail."

It is a bit ambiguous. I took it to mean that they sent the enlistment papers back, which is kind of like an admission that the kid had signed them under duress.
